What is Posterior Placenta?

The term “posterior placenta” is used to describe the placement of the placenta in relation to where it is attached to the back of the uterus. During pregnancy, the placenta is responsible for providing oxygen and nutrients for the baby.

When referring to the placenta or explaining what is meant by posterior placenta, it refers to something that is normal and healthy.



Placenta Posterior Means: Is It Normal?

Knowing what posterior means is helpful in avoiding unnecessary anxieties throughout the pregnancy period. A posterior placenta is actually considered one of the most ideal positions of the placenta because it does not affect the pregnancy or the delivery in any way.

If the ultrasound report shows placenta posterior means, it simply means that the placenta is at the back of the uterus.

Types of Posterior Placenta

There are various types of posterior placenta, depending on its placement:

1. Fundal Posterior Placenta

This is a condition in which the placenta is placed in the upper back portion of the uterus. This is considered an excellent placement for pregnancy.

2. Fundo Posterior Placenta

This is sometimes referred to in the same way as a fundal posterior placenta. It is considered healthy.

3. Posterior Low Lying Placenta

A posterior low lying placenta is a condition in which the placenta is in the lower back portion of the uterus. In some cases, it may cause complications in early pregnancy.

Is Posterior Placenta Safe?

In most instances, a posterior is completely safe and does not pose any risk to the mother or baby. It also allows for better fetal movements to be felt and does not affect the delivery in any way.

If a woman is diagnosed as having a low-lying placenta, doctors may advise precautions and monitor the pregnancy for a safe delivery.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Usually, there are no symptoms of posterior placenta. It is normally diagnosed during routine ultrasound scans.

The doctors are able to ascertain the position of the placenta. They are also in a position to explain whether it is a placenta, a fundal posterior placenta, or posterior low-lying placenta.
